What is car key replacement? A little knowledge about the kind of key you have, an older key or a newer key like a transponder or smart key, can go a long way to understanding what that means when replacing it, and what the lost car key replacement cost might be.

• With older car keys typically it will be a simple metal key that has no internal chip or encoding. A replacement key can be made with any machine that can cut metal. These replacement keys are typically the cheapest to get made.
• Car models starting around the year 2000 are more complicated, typically involving a chip or transponder.
